Leaving Kerpe
August 2nd, 2007 by WaS
I’m sitting in the lobby now of the Varuna Hotel in Kerpe. Kerpe is a small town on the Black Sea, about 50 minutes from Izmit. The main area of the town consists of a strip of nice fish restuarants right on the water with great views of the sea. There’s a small, but packed beach with shallow water where you can stand way out from the shore.

We came 3 days ago and planned to stay 4 nights but we decided to leave early. This is mostly because its pouring rain outside now but I think everyone is somewhat happy to leave. They consider themselves a 4 star hotel but I suspected from the moment we arrrived that something was amiss. It may have been the fact that the doorknob in the bathroom was installed backwards allowing an unsuspecting person to be locked in from the outside. Or it may have been that there was no hot water half the times I wanted to shower. If we wanted we could’ve had free bottled water because if I didn’t empty the water bottle that was on our balcony collecting water from the A/C every few hours, it would start dripping into the room.
It’s funny though because Varuna looks like such a nice hotel on the surface. It looks very fancy but evidently was built very cheaply. Unfortunately though, this is the only decent hotel in Kerpe so we didn’t have much of a choice. Even though all these things make it sound very bad, we still had a good time because we were with the whole family. We had two good days of beach and swimming and had fun alltogether at night.
In a few minutes we’re leaving here and heading to Sirinyali where the family has a summer house on the Marmara sea. I’m looking forward to some days of great home cooking and dancing at night on the balcony.
